Q&A: Arthritis

Question

I suffer from arthritis and have been told that there is little that can be done other than to take pain killers. What advice could you give me?

Answer

Have you thought about your diet? It is generally considered that acidic foods exacerbate the symptoms of arthritis, so try to avoid citrus fruits, particularly oranges and lemons. It is also desirable to reduce the amount of highly processed foods from the diet, they frequently contain large quantities of salt, sugar and artificial additives.

Try to include more wholegrain and unprocessed foods, such as fresh green leafy vegetables and pulses, which help to detoxify the body and neutralise acidity.

Recently, one of my patients experienced a dramatic improvement in their condition within a week, just by avoiding the lemon tea they had been drinking throughout the day!

My approach combines gentle osteopathy with dietary advice, exercise and relaxation formulated to your individual requirements; to help relieve your pain and give you more mobility and control over this debilitating condition.
